What is ISO Certification?

What is ISO certification? ISO certification refers to an internationally recognised quality management system standard that helps you with improving the quality of your products and services. The ISO is a nongovernmental organisation that determines specifications for products, services and systems for quality and efficiency.

The history of ISO dates back to the mid twentieth century, when international delegates met in London to create a new standardisation for international businesses and organisations. The ISO now has around 23,000 published standards across 164 countries worldwide, with companies achieving ISO certification to prove their quality standard.

ISO credentials are given via external bodies, as the ISO itself does not perform certification. The credentials relate to specific industries including, but not limited to: agriculture, food safety, health care, manufacturing, occupational health and safety, risk management and technology.

Why Should I Get An ISO Certification?

Now we have told you what ISO certification is, you may be wondering why should I get my business ISO certified. ISO certifications serve as proof that a business abides by the standards laid out by the ISO, and so, they assist in instilling confidence in clients and other parties. They demonstrate the fact that the business conducts itself with efficiency, and consistently strives for high quality products or services.

Having an ISO certification also displays and proves a company’s commitment to important business objectives, customer satisfaction for example. Some public and private sector organisations may even request that a company attains an ISO certification before they agree to work with them.

Benefits Of An ISO Certification

Some common benefits across all ISO standards include: increased efficiency, reduced costs, improved customer satisfaction, more engaged employees, reduced insurance premiums, reduce risks, and it also helps with tendering.

The four most common ISO standards are the following, ISO 9001 for quality management, ISO 14001 for environmental management, ISO 45001 for occupational health and safety and ISO 27001 for information security.

The Most Common ISO Certifications

ISO 9001 is perhaps the most known, and is widely used for quality management, recognised both nationally and internationally. This shows that your organisation is considered a quality organisation.  ISO 14001 is the globally recognised standard for environmental management, with this certificate, you demonstrate that your business complies with environmental legislation and regulations, and you prioritise minimising your impact on the environment. ISO 45001 demonstrates that you continuously work to ensure the best and safest possible working environment for all your staff. ISO 27001 is the standard in the field of information security. Having this certificate shows that you meet the highest requirements in terms of information security, and it shows you have a system set up to minimise the risk of data leaks.

How We Help You Get Your ISO Certification

Guthrie & Craig are here to help you achieve your ISO certification, whether it be ISO 9001, 14001, 27001, 45001. We provide first class support from system development, internal audits, all the way through to assisting you on the days of your UKAS certification assessment.

We usually start by completing a gap analysis, to see how close your current system is to meeting the requirements and standards of the ISO certification you are aiming to achieve. Once we have completed a gap analysis, we will then provide you with a full written report with our findings, then we will use this to develop an ISO implementation plan.

Once you have your system developed and you have begun to work to your processes, it usually takes around three months to achieve an ISO certification. This, however, depends on the UKAS assessment body having the resources available to undertake the assessment. It is possible to achieve ISO certification sooner, however, we would always recommend having enough time for your system to be fully implemented before undertaking an assessment.

Guthrie & Craig have an outstanding success rate in assisting businesses with achieving their UKAS certification to ISO Standards. With a success rate of 100%, you are in safe hands with Guthrie & Craig when it comes to achieving your ISO certification.
